The stage is set for the 10th anniversary of the Hero Helps Community Forum to be held from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Friday, October 15 at the Romeoville Athletic and Events Center. "The COVID-19 pandemic has brought enormous challenges to treating people dealing with an opioid use disorder,” said Dr. Kathleen Burke with the Office of Substance Use Initiatives, under the office of the Will County Executive. “The pandemic has definitely changed access to treatment and continuing support groups, and the impact of social distancing and economic uncertainty has attributed to the increase in opioid use in our county.”Speakers will include Dr. Rebecca Baker from the National Institute of Health who will speak about the HEAL initiative, Helping End Long-term Addiction, and David Jones, director of the Division of Substance Use Prevention and Recovery (SUPR) at the Illinois Department of Human Services, who will address the challenges of accessing care and the need to expand available services. The event will also include a panel discussion about Community Collaboration with members of the Will County MAPP (Mobilizing Action through Planning and Partnerships) which will include a question-and-answer session. A resource fair with 40 vendors from behavioral health, medical, support groups and other related businesses with be part of the event.
