April marks National Fair Housing Month established to recognize the passage of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 during the Civil Rights Movement. The Fair Housing Act prohibits the discrimination of home buyers based upon race, religion, sex, disability, family status, or national origin. In Will County, this historic benchmark is being recognized with efforts to further fair housing in all communities

On a blustery April day, officials from Will County gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for a new Animal Control office and a garage for Emergency Management Agency vehicles to be located just south of the Public Safety Complex.

Last week, Will County Executive Larry Walsh, Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, and county board members Herb Brooks, Jr. and Don Moran toured the construction site of the new Will County courthouse.

For the first time since 2015, Will County will host Recyclepalooza in April, providing an opportunity for spring cleaners to get rid of items in an environmentally responsible way.   

The Will County Historic Preservation Commission has begun structural surveys of all pre-1960 rural structures in Monee Township.

During this year’s Hero Helps Community Summit, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) will be addressed by a panel discussion of local providers. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, MAT is an effective part of long term recovery when used with ongoing counseling and assistance in developing a healthy lifestyle.

The Workforce Center of Will County April schedule has been released.

Career Cafe will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, April 2 and 16. Career Cafe is a networking event designed to connect people looking for work. In addition to sharing tips with other job seekers and learning job search techniques, participants will hear from guest speakers sharing their hiring expertise.

The April schedule for the Mobile Workforce Center of Will County has been released.

The mobile unit travels throughout Will County to help residents with resume development, cover letters and job applications. The workforce center contains 11 computer stations, internet access, and offers keyboarding lessons, as well as resume and job search assistance using online listings including jobs4people.org and Illinois workNet.

The Will County Board hosted United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Regional Director Doug O’Brien at its Committee of the Whole meeting Thursday, March 14. O’Brien provided an update about federal efforts in the opioid crisis and heard from several department heads about programs in the county.

State Senator Michael Hastings will host local experts for a discussion about mental illness, substance use, legislation and policy, and resources available in Will County.
