Workforce Services Division releases July workshop schedule

Workforce Services Division of Will County has scheduled its July workshops for job seekers.

Participants will learn interviewing techniques at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, in Successful Interviewing. Learn how to prepare for a job interview, be confident and make a positive impression. Attendees may schedule an individual, digitally recorded mock interview after completing the workshop. 

Book Reuse and Recycling Event ‘busiest’ ever

About 69,000 books went home with new readers from the “busiest” Will County Reuse and Recycle Book Event to date.

Tim Anderson of the Will County Land Use Department’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division said the event at the Pilcher Park Nature Center June 5-7 “was the busiest in both number of people who attended and books.” Anderson has spearheaded the event, which began in 1999, the last four years. The event is co-sponsored by the Joliet Park District.

Will County Executive Larry Walsh Adds Additional Romeoville-area Transportation Open House -- Mon. June 8

The Will County Division of Transportation has added an additional meeting to the spring open house schedule so that residents in the Romeoville, Bolingbrook and northern Will County area have an opportunity to learn more and help shape the development of the County’s 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan.  The additional open house will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., Mon., June 8 at the Romeoville Village Hall, 1050 West Romeo Road, Romeoville.

Will County unemployment continues to decline

Rate decreases by nearly one percent over last month

The employment outlook in Will County continues to improve with the latest unemployment rate listed at 6.1 percent, which is down from 6.8 percent in March 2015 and one and a half percent lower than April of 2014. Will County Executive Larry Walsh said this decrease is a positive reflection of the business climate in the county.

     “Together with our county board, our municipal and business leaders, we work very hard to keep Will County a business friendly county,” Walsh said.

Will County honors 48 schools with Earth Flag Awards

Nearly 700 students and staff members from 24 Will County schools attended the Earth Flag Awards ceremony at Rialto Square Theater in Joliet.

Another 24 schools also won the award after working with the Joan O’Keefe, the Environmental Educator with the Resource Recovery and Energy Division of the Will County Land Use Department, but were unable to attend.

Will County offers residents spay/neuter discount for pets in June

Will County residents who have their pets spayed or neutered at participating veterinary offices in June can receive a $40 county-sponsored discount.

The discount applies for up to two animals per household and is exclusively for pet owners who live in Will County. More than 10,000 pets have been treated since the program originated in 2007.

Students gathered around the plant with its one strawberry, not yet ripe, careful not to dislodge the fruit from the vine.

The strawberry plant was one of several attractions as students, staff and guests milled around the raised garden beds at William E. Young School, christened the Young Sprouts Grow and Learn Garden, during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, May 15.

Free Book Reuse and Recycling Event to be held June 5-7

The annual Will County Book Reuse and Recycling Event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday-Sunday, June 5-7, at Joliet Park District’s Pilcher Park Nature Center, 2501 Highland Park Drive.

Schools, libraries and members of the general public can bring any unwanted books for reuse and recycling, said Tim Anderson of the Will County Land Use Departments Resource Recovery and Energy Division. The books will be available to anyone attending the event free of charge. Categories include fiction, non-fiction, children’s, romance, hobby, travel, health and living, religion, textbooks, periodicals, magazines and cookbooks. 

Will County Executive Larry Walsh signs County Board resolution prohibiting additional video poker machines in unincorporated Will County

Says “time to get serious” about governing in Will County

With some serious reservations, Will County Executive Larry Walsh signed a resolution recently approved by the Will County Board that prohibits additional video poker licenses in establishments in unincorporated Will County. Walsh said although there was sizable opposition to one establishment in Frankfort Township, the action taken by the board is mostly symbolic.
