River Valley Detention Center

Part of the River Valley Justice Center, this 102 bed Juvenile Detention Center is located in Joliet, Illinois. Developed as a joint venture between Will and Kankakee Counties, RVDC is a temporary placement center for juveniles, between the ages of ten and seventeen, awaiting court decisions on their cases. Only minors who have allegedly committed a delinquent offense may be detained. Both male and female youth are housed at the location and are kept separated throughout their detention. A full library is present, along with computer labs, several housing units, a library, recreational space, physical education areas, and more that enhance personal development and improve opportunity for success upon return to the community.

  • Intake Procedures: Upon arrival, juveniles undergo an intake assessment to determine their immediate needs and risks. Decisions regarding the detention of juveniles at the River Valley Center are made based on three parameters:

    • Whether the juvenile is likely to flee the jurisdiction of the court

    • Whether the juvenile is a danger to themselves or the community

    • Whether the juvenile was taken into custody with a warrant.

  • Location and Affiliation

    • The center is strategically situated to serve the needs of Juvenile Justice in two counties (Will and Kankakee). However, it occasionally houses intakes from other counties. The center falls under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice and is located at 3200 McDonough St, Joliet, IL 60431, United States.

  • Purpose and Outreach

    • It works towards youth rehabilitation, offering structured programs focusing on education and personal development. The facility also offers psychological services to detainees in need of it.

  • Policies for Families

    • Understanding the impact on families, the temporary placement center has established clear procedures to enable visits and maintain communication. The center limits visitation of the intakes to just parents or primary guardians and attorneys. There is a visitation schedule that spells out visitation time according to the child’s housing unit.

The Joliet Juvenile Detention Center operates under strict policies that aim to uphold the rights and well-being of the detainees.
