Bertino-Tarrant joins Council of County Board Chairs

Subcommittee of Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is key to developing comprehensive regional strategies

As the Northeastern region of Illinois began experiencing remarkable growth over the past two decades, local leaders recognized the need for unified area planning to support and manage the effects of this growth in individual counties, as well as the entire region. In 2005, the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) committee was formed to create regional strategies to address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality of life issues. A subcommittee, the Council of County Board Chairs, is comprised of county leaders, and regional and local transportation officials and provides a forum to develop these plans cohesively.

CMAP includes the counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will. Newly elected Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant became an active member of this subcommittee at its Dec. 10 meeting. Discussion around the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects on the region was the primary focus of this virtual meeting.

“I am honored to represent Will County on this important regional committee,” Bertino-Tarrant said. “Our counties are closely connected, and what affects one county can impact neighboring communities. This is a diverse group of leaders and each of us has unique strengths and challenges. Together we will withstand this crisis.”

The COVID-19 crisis is presently taking center stage, with the discussion focused on the distribution of a vaccine. However, the committee members also are cognizant of future needs for coordination in regional economic goals and competitiveness. Northeastern Illinois is a significant hub in the global transportation network and Bertino-Tarrant said integrated planning will be critical to successfully manage growth and the impact on local communities.

This group of county and transportation leaders is working together to offer effective solutions that will benefit all of us who live, work, raise families, and operate businesses in these counties, the region, and the state.”
