Two Will County Emergency Management Agency employees earn special certification from international agency

During the midst of the 2020 emergencies, including the COVID-19 pandemic, civil disturbances, and unpredictable weather, two members of the Will County Emergency Management Agency achieved the designation of Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) from the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM).

Tom Murray serves as the Chief Deputy Director and Allison Anderson is the Deputy Director of the agency. Both received their designations earlier this year. According to Harold Damron, director of the agency, this year long process requires a comprehensive evaluation of several areas.

“Tom and Allison were evaluated on their education and training as well as their experience and contributions to the emergency management profession,” said Damron, who is also a CEM. “Both are highly professional and dedicated members of our agency.”

To obtain this certification, Murray and Anderson had to submit an application that included examples of their success in emergency management and complete a 100-question exam. The IAEM is the only organization that offers a certification for emergency managers. A CEM must continue to advance in their profession and apply for re-certification every five years.

“I am very proud of Tom and Allison for earning this certification,” said Will County Executive Denise Winfrey. “Director Harold Damron and all of our EMA staff do an excellent job protecting the residents of Will County. I am proud they continue to improve their skills to be ready for any emergency.”

Since the inception of the CEM program in 1993, an average of 80 individuals have received this designation each year. IAEM has 6,000 members worldwide and represents professionals whose goals are saving lives and protecting lives and the environment during emergencies and disasters.
