New Lenox family with passion for gardening named winner of 2014
America Recycles Day Photo Contest
JOLIET – A passion for digging in the dirt and growing their own food has yielded much more than a healthy crop for the Viebach family of New Lenox. John and Jamie Viebach, along with their son, Liam, were chosen as the winners of the 2014 America Recycles Day Photo Contest sponsored by the Will County Land Use Department. The family was awarded a recycled iPad provided by Vintage Tech Recyclers.
“We’ve had a garden forever,” said Jamie Viebach. “We grow our own salad greens, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and peppers.”
The Viebachs also have an active compost bin and use the contents as fertilizer for their garden. The family deposits coffee grounds, tea leaves, fruit and veggie scraps, eggshells, and a few paper products.
“The "tea" is great for my houseplants, and the compost is used to fertilize both the indoor and outdoor plants,” Jamie Viebach said.
The Will County Land Use Department began this contest in 2012 to encourage recycling habits for county residents. The department also set up a website: www.willcountygreen.com to offer residents important information about recycling options.
“I congratulate the Viebach family for their dedication to ‘green living’,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “Our land use department has done a great job in promoting recycling and other environmental efforts. It is nice to see our residents adopting these practices to help protect our natural resources.”
